Meeting an Ex-Witch

I don’t think I had a stereotypical image of what a former witch would look or act like. My initial reaction was that Kathi seemed “normal,” whatever that means. Within a few hours I could no longer use the term normal to describe Kathi Sharpe. To the contrary, my wife and I both described her as extraordinary.

When I first proposed this Unexpected Journey project to Zon-dervan, my friend and editor Paul Engle suggested parameters for the book. Among his suggestions was that each chapter should contain the concise and powerful story of the interviewee. The book would not be a lengthy treatise on other faiths, nor would it be an extensive biographical account of each participant.

Like most of those we interviewed, the challenge of telling Kathi’s story in a few pages was significant. I think you will agree with me by the time you get to the end of this chapter: this woman has a remarkable story that leaves you with a desire to hear more.

Wicca is the term that refers to a polytheistic (more than one god) neo-pagan nature religion that has as its central deity a mother goddess and that includes the use of herbal magick and divination. Adherents of this faith are often called “Wic-cans,” and sometimes they refer to themselves as “witches.”“Magick” denotes paranormal and occultic activity in contrast to the entertaining legerdemain called “magic.”
